Reviews for CIRCUS GIRL:

"(Carman's Circus Girl) hints at a bit of Fleetwood Mac via Dixie Chick skip. One of her winning factors is the flock of melodies that rarely sit there waiting for you to like them; they're too busy doing that cartoon birds-around-your-head thing. With just enough country to put a bit of tradition in the folk pop songs, Carman slides into your affections..." Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald

"If Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell had a child, I think she would sound like Susanna Carman." Ellen Burgess, Rave Magazine

"A great musician can change your mood and mindset within a few words and this is what Susanna Carman has definitely achieved... Circus Girl is an album full of voice and meaning." Nada Van Kempen, Rhythms Magazine

"When you're feeling overwhelmed by life's complications, you can always find the joy and simplicity in music, which is what Susanna Carman has done with Circus Girl, with songs that show Carman's finger-picking guitar technique and some striking vocal harmonies..." Noel Mengel, Brisbane Courier Mail

CIRCUS GIRL is the exquisite second album from critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Susanna Carman. The album is set for national release in April 2011, with Australian and US tours to follow.

Susanna’s organic and authentic approach is more evident than ever on Circus Girl. With influences that include vintage Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin and folk songstress Kate Rusby, the paired-back production, acoustic tone, vividly textured vocal arrangements, and delicate guitar and violin playing have become her trademark. It’s what Susanna calls “a tinkling of magical soundscapes”.

Byron Bay-based producer Christian Pyle, whose credits include Jesse Younan, The Re-Mains and M Jack Bee, took the reigns for Susanna’s Circus Girl at his Goonengerry studio. Helping out with backing vocals on the Appalachian inspired “Noah’s Ark” and the heartfelt version of the Elizabeth Cotten blues classic “Babe It Ain’t No Lie” is fellow singer-songwriter and touring collaborator, Sara Tindley. Slide guitar contributions on the title track “Circus Girl” come from folk blues artist, Jez Mead. And between them, Susanna and Christian play all the other instruments including guitars, strings, keyboards and percussion.

“There’s something meaningful about simplicity, about a body of work being presented in a simple way,” says Susanna. “The story and storytelling, a song reflecting who the person is and the journey that they are on. It’s about the intimacies and difficulties of staying true and real in a complicated, challenging and distracting world, and I think people understand and can relate to that.”

What the press said about Susanna’s first album, HOLY:

Former New Yorker Susanna Carman lives between Brisbane and Sydney these days, and her music takes up a similar in-between position straying from lilting folk to gentle country and low bubbling pop. It's a perfect spot for Carman's attractively relaxed voice, which touches on some real pain, lets you feel it without histrionics, and then finds an optimistic route out each time. Holy is both pretty and personal and bears witness with grace and some style.
Sydney Morning Herald

Susanna Carman’s music is deeply rooted within the American Folk genre, yet there is something here that is her own. The extraordinary quality of Carman’s voice and the emotional depth of her songs, delivered sincerely and without show, makes for captivating listening.
