The Process:
Songlines offers workshops that combine singing, songwriting & performance into one integrated body, mind, spirit experience.
- Singing is a way of using the body to express something from deep within. It can reveal things that are ordinarily masked by the personality.
- Songwriting is a creative practice that calls on both intuition and intellect, and is a way to connect with divine forces greater than ourselves.
- Performance is an experience that, when met with deep presence and authenticity, can bring both performer and audience into presence and a state of oneness.
Songlines, also called Dreaming Tracks by Indigenous Australians, is an ancient cultural concept. It can be understood as an intricate series of song cycles that identify landmarks and subtle tracking mechanisms for navigation. For the Aborigines, all land is sacred and alive. Their ancestors sang the world into being and dwell in the land still.
The name Songlines has come to represent the sacred journey through song...

Songlines was founded in 2001 by Susanna Carman and Jalalo. Susanna is an experienced songwriter, performer, educator and facilitator. She has toured in Australia and the U.S., holds a BA in Contemporary Music, is a Dolphin Award winning vocalist and is a multi-instrumentalist who plays the violin, guitar and viola. She has been teaching music in Rudolph Steiner Education since 2001. She is also a certified high school English teacher, has guest lectured in Vocal Studies at Southern Cross University (NSW) and has been working as a vocal coach with teens and adults for over ten years. After the release of her debut E.P. in 2001, her single, "The Moment" was picked up by the ABC and included in the compilation album, HIGHWIRE. Her recent album, HOLY, was highly acclaimed by critics and fans. As a result, she has spent the past two years touring both Australia and the States promoting it's release. Susanna lives with her daughter and husband outside Byron Bay, Australia.
Jalalo is also a Dolphin Award winner for her album LETTING GO, has toured in numerous bands in Australia, the U.S. and India, and has been the harmony vocalist for Miten and Deva Premal in their concerts here in Byron Bay. She is gifted singer songwriter who has worked extensively with individuals on uncovering their authentic voice for well over a decade. It is through her experience as a performer, teacher and facilitator that she has developed a unique approach to helping people sing from the heart. Jalalo lives in the rainforest outside of Byron Bay.
